As an executive search and staffing firm, rarely do we ever focus on firing people. However, it’s an unfortunate process that is inevitable within the workplace. Dealing With Brain Drain:
Sometimes, People Just Have to Move On
Is brain drain inevitable if your company isn’t growing, or is there something more to this than meets the eye?

Sometimes there is an undercurrent of reality that should be acknowledged: people have to move on. And this is the easiest time of year to acknowledge it. It’s the end of the year and one of the top New Year resolutions is about getting a new job. If you aren’t in an ideal situation, it’s even easier to say.

Well, maybe they don’t have to leave. When people leave mentally but stay and take up a seat in your organization, that’s bad as well. But at least they are still there, right? It is not only important to understand where your company is in the morale and engagement department, but to also know what your tolerance is for deadweight employees.

Finding the right talent that fits the culture of your company,is best for times when your company continues to stay flat. Identify candidates who are excited about the challenges that the lack of rapid growth present. Contact us to today to let AccruePartners provide you with unique opportunities to valuable talent & be sure to check out this month’s featured candidates below.

“At the end of the day, it isn’t just about a having a visionary idea or business plan. It’s about employees who bring passion and flawless execution.”

Such is how Kevin Ryan began – and set the tone for – his keynote address, Hirer’s Remorse? Why 80 Percent of Business is Choosing the Right People, at the recent Inc500/5000 Conference & Awards Ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Ryan should know a thing or two about what it takes to grow and run a business. He has launched several New York-based businesses, including Gilt Groupe (for which he is the current CEO), Business Insider, ShopWiki, 10gen/MongoDB, and, not least of all, DoubleClick, which he helped grow from a 20-person startup to a worldwide company with over 1,500 employees.

Drawing from his own experience, Ryan discussed the beliefs and practices that have fueled his success as a business leader, the foundation of which, are based on people.

HIRING STRUGGLE PHENOMENON
Behind the highest unemployment levels in more than a quarter century is an unexpected twist: Employers are having a difficult time filling some positions, even as 13.9 million Americans remain without work. The problem is especially acute in pockets such as Washington, D.C., and North Dakota, which bucked the worst of the 18-month recession that ended June 2009, and in industries such as technology where competition for recruits remains high.

The failure to match willing employers with appropriate workers is contributing to a jobless rate that has stalled around 9 percent or higher since April 2009 and is keeping the unemployed on the sidelines for longer. The rate was 9.1 percent in July, when payrolls rose by 117,000 workers after an increase of 46,000 a month earlier, the Labor Department said Aug. 5.

Employees Seeking Greener Pastures
Half of the American workforce may soon be bounding for the building exits, What’s Working survey reveals. The survey, conducted by human-resources consultants at Mercer LLC, illustrates just how discontent workers are with their jobs, with half of the 2,400 workers polled expressing unfavorable opinions of their employers.

In addition, one in three workers are seriously considering leaving their current jobs, more than a 20 percent increase in the past six years. Twenty-one percent of employees have already mentally checked out, citing negative views and dissatisfaction.

Results establish nonexistent wage growth and increased workloads as the root of workers’ dissatisfaction, with more than half of those surveyed claiming they’re not happy with their pay rate, followed by issues with career development and performance management.

Don’t delay when quality talent is knocking on your door!
Time is critical when it comes to hiring a highly qualified candidate; therefore, make the most of every interaction with them. Plant a strong seed with a lasting impression – you and your organization have the opportunity to capture the candidates’ attention with the first interview. Continue to maintain the newly created relationship by following-up in a timely manner.

Act fast. Once you are confident in the talent of the prospective candidate and believe they will flourish within your organization, make the hire. Fast actions will prevent a candidate from being lured by your competition. Assume that every candidate has to choose your hire from a pool of opportunities. How will you mold their first impression and how fast will you act?

Labor Shortage Persists in Some Fields
There are nearly 14 million people looking for a job, but few have the skills to fill the four computer engineering openings at Gowalla Inc.

The Austin, Texas-based start-up, which competes with FourSquare Inc. in location-based social networking, hopes to add the programmers to its 27-person staff, but finding applicants with the right skills is a challenge, said Gowalla Chief Executive Josh Williams. “Most people we want are employed somewhere already. We don’t get a lot of applications coming in,” he said.

Overall, companies have slowly begun to hire again. In January, employers added 36,000 jobs, according to the Labor Department. The number of job openings has grown more rapidly. According to the Conference Board Inc., a nonprofit research organization, there were 4.3 million advertised job openings in January, 16% more than a year ago.» read more
